Advantage Gold is the better fit for most first-time buyers and for rollovers under $25,000, because it opens an account at $5,000 and an account executive handles the paperwork with you. Goldco suits a larger rollover from a buyer who already knows the process and wants the lowest yearly administration fee of the two.

Both dealers sell IRA-approved bullion, charge the same setup fee and the same storage fee, and land within $200 of each other on ten-year fees. The real difference is the size of the account each one is built for.

The ten-year comparison rests on the flat fees, because the markup on the metal is set per order, and our fee calculator runs the same arithmetic for your own balance with the markup you are quoted.

Minimum investment

The minimum is where the two companies split most clearly. Advantage Gold’s $5,000 minimum covers a modest 401(k) or IRA balance, which describes most people rolling over for the first time. Goldco’s $25,000 minimum is aimed at a larger balance.

If your rollover is between $5,000 and $25,000, Advantage Gold is the choice of the two, and the question of which has lower fees never comes up. If your balance is above $25,000, both are open to you and the rest of this page applies. Our page on the Advantage Gold minimum investment covers how the $5,000 figure works in practice.

What each one costs over ten years

The table adds the setup fee and ten years of administration and commingled storage. It leaves out the price of the metal itself and any shipping and insurance on direct purchases outside an IRA.

ChargeAdvantage GoldGoldco
Setup fee $50 $50
Yearly storage, commingled $100 $100
10 years of administration and storage $2,000 $1,800
10-year fees $2,050 $1,850

Setup fee and 10 years of administration and storage, from published or third-party fee figures for each company. These are list fees before any waiver. The markup on the metal is quoted per order and sits outside these totals.

Goldco comes out $200 lower on ten-year fees, and the whole gap comes from the administration fee. Goldco charges $80 a year and Advantage Gold charges $100, and $20 across 10 years is $200. That works out to about $20 a year of difference at list fees.

Goldco publishes its fee schedule on its own site, which makes its numbers easy to check, while Advantage Gold walks you through its schedule on the first call. If you want to see the arithmetic before you talk to anyone, our Advantage Gold ten-year cost page adds up the fees line by line.

Education and hand-holding

Advantage Gold is built around a guided first purchase. It offers a free one-on-one call, a free Ultimate Gold IRA Guide, a gold ira beginner's guide, 10 chapters, ten short FAQ videos, a podcast of about 20 minutes an episode, and calculators that compare gold against the S&P 500 and against physical and paper ETFs. The company describes a full-service rollover in which its account executive completes the application with you, the custodian contacts your old plan and the funds move without passing through your hands. It says the application takes about 30 minutes or less with an account executive on the line.

Goldco, for its part, publishes a buyback guarantee, which matters to anyone thinking about how they will eventually sell. Its own-site fee page also makes it a good choice for a buyer who prefers to read the numbers first and call second.

How a rollover works at each company

The mechanics are the same in outline. You open a self-directed IRA with a custodian, the custodian requests the funds from your old plan, and the dealer buys approved metal that goes to an insured depository. What differs is how much of that process the dealer walks you through.

At Advantage Gold the account executive completes the custodial application with you, and you e-sign it. You send a statement from your current plan, and the custodian contacts the old administrator and moves the money. The account executive then goes through eligible coins and bars with you, and Advantage Gold buys, packs, insures and ships them to the depository. The company states the account is funded in a few days after the statement is sent. Because the funds go straight from one custodian to the other, none of it touches your hands, and you avoid the 60-day window that applies to an indirect rollover.

Goldco follows the same broad sequence, as any IRA rollover does. If you have done a rollover before, or you have an adviser who handles the paperwork, the extra guidance matters less and the lower annual fee matters more.

What the metal choice looks like

Advantage Gold lists 39 products across gold, silver, platinum, palladium. It states the IRS purity floors on its FAQ page, 99.5% for gold and 99.9% for silver, and it tells you which of its products qualify for an IRA and which are for direct purchase only. That distinction is worth having in hand before you buy, and our page on IRA-eligible products lists it.

A worked example over ten years

Over 10 years Advantage Gold’s fees come to $2,050, which is $50 to open and $2,000 of administration and storage. Goldco’s fees come to $1,850 over the same period.

That is the reason the choice rarely turns on fees alone. A $200 gap over 10 years is small next to the value of getting the first purchase right, and for a first-time buyer that argues for the company that offers more guidance.

Ratings and track record

Advantage Gold has operated since 2014 and holds a A+ grade from the Better Business Bureau, where it has been accredited since 2014. The Business Consumer Alliance gives it AAA, the top level it awards. On review sites it shows 4.8 on Trustpilot across 1,920 reviews, 4.9 on TrustLink across 495, and 4.9 on Google across 987.

The three things to plan for with Advantage Gold

The company does not publish its fees online, so you get the schedule on the call, and it runs no live chat, so questions go by phone or through the contact form. Shipping and insurance are charged on direct purchases outside an IRA, which leaves metal bought inside the account unaffected. None of these affects a rollover into an IRA in a way that changes the comparison above, and the $5,000 minimum is the one to check against your own balance first.

The verdict

For a first gold IRA under $25,000, choose Advantage Gold. For a larger balance the two are close on fees, and the choice comes down to whether you want a guided process, which is Advantage Gold’s strength, or the lowest yearly administration fee, which is Goldco’s.
