Advantage Gold distributions and selling back

Advantage Gold distributions run through your custodian in cash or in kind, and RMDs begin at age 73, with a buyback that raises the cash on request.

Advantage Gold distributions follow one of two routes, and both are straightforward: you sell metal back to the company through its buyback for cash, or you ask your custodian to distribute the coins and bars themselves. The IRS starts required minimum distributions at age 73 under SECURE 2.0, and an account holding metal can meet that amount with either route.

This page covers both routes and the age rules, using Advantage Gold’s own FAQ, checked on September 29, 2026, and the IRS page on required minimum distributions. The buyback page covers a sale from inside the account in five steps.

Route one, sell back inside the IRA

The company offers a buyback service on request, and its FAQ states the policy in one line: “We’ll never turn away a customer.” You contact your account executive, name the coins or bars and the quantity, and get a quote for the sale on that day.

The custodian authorizes the sale and the depository releases the metal, so it never comes to your home. The proceeds land in your IRA as cash, and because the sale only changes what the account holds, you choose when to take the money out.

That is the natural route for a required distribution taken in cash, because a buyback turns the exact amount of metal you need into cash inside the account. The company has operated since 2014, and the firm that sold you the metal is the one that buys it back.

Route two, take the metal in kind

You can also ask your custodian, STRATA Trust Company or Equity Trust Company, to distribute the metal itself. The depository releases the coins or bars to you, and the IRS treats the distribution at the fair market value of the metal on the date it leaves the account.

An in-kind distribution suits a holder who wants the physical gold and is ready to receive it. Your account executive can walk through the paperwork with you before you file it, and the custodian handles the release from the depository.

Required minimum distributions at 73

The IRS states that required minimum distributions from a traditional IRA begin at age 73, following SECURE 2.0, and it publishes the schedule on its required minimum distributions FAQ. Your first distribution is due by April 1 of the year after you turn 73, and each later one is due by December 31.

The required amount is based on the account’s value at the end of the prior year and an IRS life expectancy factor for your age, and your custodian can calculate it for you, so you start from a set dollar figure each year. The IRS says Roth IRA owners have no required minimum distributions during their own lifetime, which makes a Roth gold IRA a fit for a buyer who wants to leave the account untouched.

Advantage Gold opens Traditional IRA, Roth IRA, SEP IRA, Simple IRA accounts, so the rules for your account type decide which of these paths applies to you. A tax professional can confirm the tax treatment of any distribution for your situation.

Planning ahead makes it easy

A holder who plans a year ahead has an easy time with distributions. Your account holds metal, so if you want the distribution in cash, knowing the dollar amount well before December 31 lets you request a buyback with time to spare.

The yearly fees continue while the account is open, at $100 for administration and $100 for commingled storage, so they are part of the same yearly picture. The fees page lists each line, and the custodian and depository page explains who holds what.

Who it fits, and who should look elsewhere

This setup suits a holder who wants one company for the purchase and the exit, since the same account executive who guided your buying handles the sale. It also suits a retiree who expects to take distributions in cash, because the buyback is built for exactly that step.

It fits less well if you want to read fees on the company’s own site, since Advantage Gold does not post a schedule there. It runs no live chat, so questions go by phone, email or the contact form, and direct purchases outside an IRA carry shipping and insurance charges. If any of those points matters, compare matched companies against your plans, and read the full Advantage Gold review first.
